If you are unable to donate blood for ANY reason, but still would like to help,
please consider making a donation to the Ronad McDonald House nearest you.
Some of the things they need:
- toiletry samples (especially hair care products like shampoo/conditioner)
- canned foods (especially in microwavable cans)
- bottled water, soda pop, bottled juice (individual containers)
- snack food items (individually wrapped)
- homemade meals (call ahead to see when you should bring it and for how many people)
- monetary donations (either at the facility directly, or at McDonald's fast food chains - even change from your order will
help!)
- magazines (in good condition - remove the address label)
- volunteers
- call for additional items
The Ronald McDonald House in Texas Children's Hospital for the parents/grandparents
of babies in the NICU does NOT charge the families for anything!!! They rely SOLELY on donated items, and run out frequently.
The volunteers staffing the facility vary in age, but ALL are extremely kind
and make us feel at home. The snacks and food we are able to eat there come from families and community members as well
as local businesses (for example, Papa John's Pizza donates pizzas each Thursday for lunch)
This non-profit organization allows us to be near Theresa without the financial
burden of staying in Houston. They have a "family room" with a television, computer room, quiet room, kitchen/eating
area, and 20 bedrooms/bathrooms for the families. During the hours of 1 pm - 5 pm they are open for "naps" and resting
in the bedrooms, and the sleeping hours are from 7 pm - 11 am. We have utilized this daily since being discharged from
the hospital, and it truly is a blessing.
The next time you eat at McDonald's, please take the time to remember that they
serve more than just burgers and fries.
